Food Revolution

I have tremendous respect for Jamie Oliver. His recipes are delicious and wholesome, with an emphasis on homegrown, seasonal produce. I hope he can actually make a difference in the eating habits of the world. (I believe he can!)
The second video is quite long so only watch it if you are really interested. The statistics are pretty enlightening.

I recommend his books as well. Yum.

best year

For the past 12 months, I have counted myself the luckiest girl on the planet. I suspect I'll feel that way for a while.

From Greatdad.com

Kids define love:

"When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn't bend over and paint her toenails anymore. So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That's love."
- Rebecca - age 8

"When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different. You just know that your name is safe in their mouth." - Billy - age 4

"Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs." - Chrissy - age 6

"Love is what makes you smile when you're tired." - Terri - age 4

"Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK." - Danny - age 7

"Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more. My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss" - Emily - age 8

"Love is what's in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen." - Bobby - age 7

"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day." - Mary Ann - age 4

I die

I usually hate tweed but my heart skipped more than one beat when I saw this Chanel Couture SS/10 video. I am swooning over every detail (including the heart-shaped hair).

Happy Valentine's Day

Whether alone or with someone special, enjoy the day.

My favorite poem:

If I could write words
Like leaves on an autumn forest floor,
What a bonfire my letters would make.

If I could speak words of water,
You would drown when I said
"I love you."
-Spike Milligan

And my favorite commercial:

Unromantic Films

To ignore V-day with. (Less quotable than romances)

Brief Interviews with Hideous Men
If you want to lose even more faith in men.

He's Just Not that Into You
Sure, women can be crazy sometimes, but do you have to rub our faces in it?

Fatal Attraction
Read "fatal"

Closer
Jealousy, deceit, infidelity and identity theft.

Revolutionary Road
Any home that looks that perfect can't be.

Ma Mer
Strange and wildly innapropriate.

Sex and the City: The Movie
To see the strong and beautiful Carrie jilted is heartbreaking.

American Psycho
Think having your heart broken is tough? Try having your brains eaten.

Thelma and Louise
Two ladies rid themselves of men by taking to the road.

It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Ok, it's not a movie but it's certainly unromantic enough to be mentioned.

Love Stories

Romantic movies, old and new.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

"My embarrassing admission is I really like that you're nice, right now."

Casablanca
"With the whole world crumbling, we pick this time to fall in love."

Amelie
"Any normal girl would call the number, meet him, return the album and see if her dream is viable. It's called a reality check. The last thing Amélie wants."

The Princess Bride
"Death cannot stop true love. All it can do is delay it for a while."

Camelot
"The way to handle a woman is to love her, simply love her."

Say Anything
"Nobody thinks it will work, do they?""No. But you just described every great success story."

The Way We Were ( for my mom)
"Wouldn't it be lovely if we were old? We'd have survived all this. Everything thing would be easy and uncomplicated; the way it was when we were young"

When Harry Met Sally
"I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."

Gone With the Wind
"I love you. Because we're alike. Bad lots, both of us. Selfish and shrewd. But able to look things in the eyes as we call them by their right names. "

Wall-E (my favorite)
There's not much talking in this, so i'll leave you this video instead. I advise you to watch the whole thing.

love bites.

Red Velvet Cake is pretty classic for Valentine's Day, but I prefer these little one bite treats. I call these Love Bites (I've seen similar recipes called Aphrodite cakes) because the frosty pink tops, scented with rose water are delighfully sweet aphrodisiacs. Make some for everyone this weekend.

For the cookies:

1 cup butter, softened
1 ½ cups powdered sugar
1 large egg
1 tsp. vanilla extract
2 ½ cups flour, sifted
2 tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. salt

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
Cream together butter and sugar, add egg and vanilla and beat well.
Sift together flour and remaining ingredients and gradually add to sugar mixture, beating to combine.
Roll into 1” balls and flatten slightly onto cookie sheet.
Bake 8 to 10 minutes, allow to cool on a wire rack.

For the icing
:

4 Tbs butter (1/2 stick)
4 ounces cream cheese (1/2 block)
1 pound powdered sugar
3 Tbsp. heavy cream
2 tsp. rosewater*
red food coloring (just enough to create light pink)

Whip together the butter and cream cheese until well combined. Gradually add the powdered sugar and enough heavy cream to allow for easy piping. Add the rosewater and a few drops of coloring. Mix to incorporatate. Pipe little swirls or rosettes onto the flat part of each cookie (this can be done using a pastry bag or a ziploc bag with the corner snipped off).
*Rosewater is found with the other extracts in your grocery or specialty store. Some people find the taste a little too perfume-y. I personally love it, expecially in these. However they would be delicious without it and I imagine orange, almond, or just vanilla extract would make nice substitutes.

Voila. Prepare to be kissed by whoever eats these.

So, we know I love musicals, but I love this way too much.

Amy Adams was brilliant in this part. Romance and fairytales, what could be better?

Books for the cynic

Or anyone feeling less than starry-eyed this V-day.

The Woman Destroyed by Simone de Beauvoir
Photobucket

Three stories of failing relationships. It won't make you laugh or feel good about being single but it does offer some sense of comraderie to anyone who has ever had their heart broken. Beautifully written and honest.

Painted Elephant by Jill Hartman
Photobucket

Unrequited love, the saddest kind. An Indian elephant falls in love with a Wooden Maytag Man statue. With guest appearances from Nina Simone, Canadian poets and Greek myth, this book of poems can be read cover to cover in under an hour, but set aside 2 because you will want to read it again.

Women by Charles Bukowski
Photobucket

Portrays men as women trading dirtbags and women as wetnaps who allow it to happen. Nuff said.

Candide by Voltaire
Photobucket

A classic, mocks romance and its effect on people. Though romance is not the center of the plot which makes this a great/must read for anyone.

The Book of Samson by David Maine
Photobucket

Because don't we all want to tear down a city after someone we love betrays us? This is, in no way, a biblical tale. David Maine takes the story of Samson and makes him a monstrous brute with a self distructing temper that erupts shortly after the beguiling Delilah enters his life.

I really enjoyed this post by The Sartorialist, Scott Schuman. It's nice to know that chivalry is not dead just yet.

Did you write the Book of Love?

Each of these page-turners will have you reaching for the tissue box and the nearest boy (or girl) to kiss. I'll spare you the synopsese since you can find those on any book site, but here are my thoughts on each:

Katherine by Anya Seton
Photobucket
The story of Katherine Swynford and her love affair with the Duke of Lancaster. Filled with honest longing and uplifting surrender.

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier
Photobucket
This book is so beautifully written that the story could be terrible and no one would be the wiser. Not a typical romance but it illustrates the limits of love and devotion in a way that will tug at your heartstrings.

Green City in the Sun by Barbara Wood
Photobucket
Chronicles several generations of misguided love. Set in Kenya this epic will make you reevaluate all of your thoughts on real love.

The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough
Photobucket
Exploding with sexual tension and repressed passion, be prepared to cry every other page and promise yourself that you will never settle for anyone other than your true love.

The Ice People by Rene Barjavel
Photobucket
This is one of my favorite books of all time, I rarely lend it out because of my tremendous fear that I'll never get it back(it's out of print). The 1960s science fiction novel recalls an old world love, literally frozen in time. Beautifully written, racy, and utterly romantic.

Love Poems by Pablo Neruda
Photobucket
The Chilean Nobel Prize Winner defines the love poem. Truely.

Other notable reads:
Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, and Witness to my Life: Letters from Jean Paul Sartre to Simone de Beauvoir.

If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear!

Valentine's Day

I find that people tend to have very varied and very strong opinions of Valentine's Day. Some say it's a holiday invented by greeting cards (which, well, it is) and serves only to upset single folk. Others say it's a day to celebrate the world's greatest gift, love. I personally welcome any cause for celebration, especially when the reason is romance. So, in an attempt not to leave anyone out on this blog, I thought it would be fun to do some posts for those celebrating the affects of Cupid's arrow and some for those who couldn't care less. I'll start tomorrow with books to read when you're in love. Enjoy!
